Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail Cross Country Ski Report – 03/08

Thursday, March 8, 2018

Fresh snow the past couple of days gave us one last opportunity to groom the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail. The entire trail from Empire to Glen Arbor and on to Port Oneida Road was groomed today. We were also able to groom Palmer Woods.

This is probably the last grooming of the SBHT for this season!

The snow cover was very light in open areas near Glen Haven, the Dune Climb, and just north of the Bar Lake Trailhead in Empire. Snow cover in the wooded areas was much better.

We created 2 sets of classic tracks from Glen Arbor to Glen Haven.

The trail from Empire to the Dune Climb has only 1 set of classic tracks – an attempt to provide the skate skiers with a wider skating surface.

Best ski conditions are: Park at the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive and ski either north or south. One set of classic tracks and relatively good base. The area near the Homestead is also very good.

Glen Arbor to Glen Haven
2 sets of classic tracks, relatively good base.
Glen Haven to Dune Climb
No classic tracks – snow around Glen Haven and Dune Climb is pretty thin.
Dune Climb to Empire
From Empire to the driveways before you get to the Dune Climb the snow is good and one set of classic tracks was created.
Glen Arbor to Port Oneida Road
Good conditions – 1 set of classic tracks most of the way.
Port Oneida Road to CR-669
Ungroomed – backcountry ski and snowshoe tracks.

Palmer Woods

BEST CONDITIONS – good base and soft snow. Two sets of classic tracks where the trail is wide enough.

The parking lot for Palmer Woods trail is on Wheeler Road.
