Valley Spur Trail System Cross Country Ski Report – 04/04
Weather? It determines everything we do at Valley Spur. Things were looking good for a long Spring Season of skiing then we get hit with over 18 inches of snow. This much snow we need our Jeeps to groom the trails and unfortunately both are down and John Cromell is working on them. Not easy fixes for either Jeep. John Geirke did his best to give us a little skiing after the big storm. Now Mother Nature is sending us freezing rain and high winds and then warm temperatures. As the old saying goes, "You can’t fight Mother Nature". What needs to happen at Valley Spur to improve our trails? New equipment and someone wanting to be our 2nd Groomer to help out John Cromell all season long. We have asked a few possible candidates and have had no takers. Being a Groomer is a big commitment. The Friends of VS does pay the groomers, so that is not the issue. The second thing that needs to happen is purchasing new grooming equipment. The committee is working on that but, boy are we going to need everyone’s help with that. We are going to need money to achieve this goal. Donations will be needed. The third thing we need from all of you is for you to ask yourself, "What can I do to volunteer at Valley Spur?". Instead of you asking why wasn’t this done or that, say what could I do to help out. People giving suggestions to the already over loaded volunteers is not the answer. It’s April 4th I am pretty sure grooming season is all done at Valley Spur. We will be updating you on many of the things that need to be accomplished at Valley Spur to continue our mission of providing Silent Sports for our community of outdoor enthusiast. Skied W this a.m. and things were very good. Used skins, and getting glide on the left of the trail. Get there early. I was able to get in upper parking lot. A lot of base left. Tried to ski B, but not much glide...

Friday April 7th, received a smidge of new snow. Both tracks and skate lanes have firmed up. Unless you have towing, stay out of the upper lot.

April 1st, What a storm! No kidding 18 inches or more of snow and high winds. John Geirke will try to put in some grooming for classic skiing and Wyatt Seaberg will clean out the parking lot for the 2nd time today. Maybe by 1 pm we could be skiing. John is opening up the lodge. Don't be afraid to grab a shovel and clean up around the lodge. Don't head out on the roads until it clears up a bit. Be safe.

Several inches of wet snow overnight and light snow falling. The scenery is great so if you can make it out a ski around B would be worth it. No-wax or skins may work. With temps at or above freezing grooming equipment easily plugs up...

Things turned out great today. Skate lanes were firm, but easy to get an edge. Yesterday’s snow had filled the older classic tracks making things slower. People kept showing up all day.
Depending on temps in a.m. we will redo some of the skate lanes. Our Jeeps are down for major maintenance. John C or groomer has performed miracles to get them through this winter. Keep an eye on the weather and posts here.
