XC Ski Headquarters Cross Country Ski Report – 02/26

Results from yesterday’s grooming are most excellent!

After the snowfall Sunday night and a day of letting the trails set up, great conditions are back on the XC Ski HQ trails. Trail Doctor Josh worked tirelessly yesterday clearing downed branches, enabling Groomer Bob was able to snow comb and set tracks on the Blizzard, Rolling Hills, Mackinaw Cut and Wild Turkey trails yesterday afternoon. Groomers Mike and Tony will continue clearing, snow combing, and setting tracks on all the other trails this morning. Snow depth in the woods is 22 to 26 inches, and packed on the trail about 12 to 14 inches. The few pine needles and oak leaves that came down in the storm will likely be covered up by the snow we are forecast to receive in the next 24 hours. Come enjoy the great conditions for classic and skating!

Weather forecast:
Today: Partly cloudy skies this morning will become overcast during the afternoon. High 16F. Winds NW at 5 to 10 mph.
Tonight: Cloudy with periods of snow after midnight. Low 7F. Winds light and variable. Chance of snow 80%. 1 to 3 inches of snow expected.
Tomorrow: Snow during the morning will give way to lingering snow showers during the afternoon. High 21F. Winds SE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of snow 80%. 1 to 3 inches of snow expected.

A favorite tradition at Cross Country Ski Headquarters, Ribs & Blues features an afternoon of live music from local duo, Carpe Diem, plus some of the best barbeque in all the land: German Dave’s famous slow cooked barbequed ribs! It’s a perfect day to hit the trails, and then kick back by the outdoor fire pit and enjoy great music in a festive, outdoor atmosphere, while feasting on succulent ribs, scalloped potatoes, and cole slaw. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for kids 8 and younger.
Sunday, March 3rd: 27th Annual Junior Muffin Race!

The Muffin Race, which is the longest standing Junior race in Michigan, celebrates the fun of youth skiing with a Junior Girls & Boys Team Sprint Relay race. Inspired by the Gold Medal victory by Jessie Diggins and Kikkan Randall in the 2018 Olympics, this freestyle relay race will feature two skiers per relay team. Each skier will ski a total of 3 laps around a 1km course, handing off to their teammate between each lap, totaling 6 laps per team. Registration begins at 9:30am on Sunday, and we will shoot for a 10:30am start. This is a Michigan Cup Junior Race. Medals will be awarded to the top 3 finishers in the girls division, boys division, and coed division, and awards will also be given for best costumes! After the Muffin Team Sprint Relay Race, we will hold three Mini Muffin freestyle races: Ages 6 years and under, 7 to 9 and 10 to 12. All racers 12 and under will be awarded a medal!

There is a $10 entry fee for Muffin Racers 13 and older. There is no entry fee for the Mini Muffin Racers. All racers receive a Pig Roast lunch at the awards ceremony. The Pig Roast is $5 for anyone else who might be hungry too. All racers and family members who partake in the Pig Roast will also receive a complimentary 1-day XC SKI HQ facilities pass.
