Noquemanon Trail Network Cross Country Ski Report – 03/11

Forestville: Short Version: Please note, trails affected by logging operation. This morning we groomed the skate lanes on the Noque and Animoosh to a new cutover. We broke trail for a new cut over and groomed at labo corner which is half k shy of great planes (13k). Due to the logging operation Animoosh closed at labo corner. Noque does go to grand junction but dead ends there at logging road. Noque will not be Re-groomed beyond Labo junction. We will work on other trails as weather permits. The trails to the north of the Noque are unaffected so there is still lots of skiing out there yet.

Please see The Way Too Long Version below for comments on logging operations affecting the trails.

For skiers that wish to know exactly when each trail was groomed last please follow this link to our interactive map page. http://www.noquetrails.org/trails/noquemanon We have added a grid and the groomers will update when an individual trail was groomed last. I should add, if you have not used the interactive map you must do so. You “hover” over a trail section and click and a video of skiing that section will launch. It is like magic.

The Way Too Long Version:
Spring Skiers: Following over 120 days of mid-winter conditions we find ourselves in a week long freeze/thaw cycle. With good snow cover this should mean a good deal of spring skiing.

However, some of our trails will be affected by spring logging operations. Skiers are reminded that most of the U.P. is a commercial forest. This is a great thing because it allows us to play in the woods. However every 15 years or so the garden needs to be thinned. The land owners practice the highest form of sustainable forestry and selectively harvest the high quality northern hardwood. If you see them in the woods, thank them for their stewardship.

The Noque from 13k to 15k will likely be affected. This means we will not be able to ski or groom from Forestville to 510. Skiers can still park at 510 and ski down to 15k and most of the loop trails to the north of the Noque will be unaffected. In addition, the trail to the tourist park is unaffected.

We will concentrate our grooming efforts on these areas and will likely have as many K to ski as otherwise, albeit different trails. On the bright side, you will likely get to learn how to pronounce some different Ojibway words like Bagwagi and Chiwagi.

We will keep a close eye on the logging progress and update you as news becomes available.
