XC Ski Headquarters Cross Country Ski Report – 02/28

6 fresh inches of snow is a great send off into March!

We received over 6 inches of light, fluffy snow throughout Tuesday night and Wednesday, and with the big snow banks and tons of snow in the trees, it’s absolutely beautiful around here! Groomer Mike will Ginzu snow comb and roll in tracks on all trails this morning. Skate lanes will be soft today. Snow depth in the woods is 24 to 28 inches, and packed on the trail about 14 to 16 inches. This may well be the snowiest last day of February we’ve had in quite a while. With temps in the mid-20’s today, it’s an ideal day to ski and should be enjoyed by many!

Weather forecast:
Today: A mix of clouds and sun during the morning will give way to cloudy skies this afternoon. High 26F. Winds SW at 5 to 10 mph.
Tonight: Mostly cloudy early, then clearing overnight. Low 7F. Winds light and variable.
Tomorrow: Partly cloudy skies during the morning hours will become overcast in the afternoon. High 32F. Winds light and variable.

Today’s Stone Turtle Day Lodge Cafe Lunch Special is Erin’s Favorite Tuna Panini! Albacore tuna, provolone, black olives, tomatoes, spinach, onion and chipotle mayo on hearty grain bread. Grilled to perfection and served with Great Lakes Chips and a Pickle. Top it off with a fresh baked chocolate chip cookie if you’re so inclined!

Join us for a weekend of fun XC events!

Saturday, March 2nd: Ribs & Blues!

A favorite tradition at Cross Country Ski Headquarters, Ribs & Blues features an afternoon of live music from local duo, Carpe Diem, plus some of the best barbeque in all the land: German Dave’s famous slow cooked barbequed ribs! It’s a perfect day to hit the trails, and then kick back by the outdoor fire pit and enjoy great music in a festive, outdoor atmosphere, while feasting on succulent ribs, scalloped potatoes, and cole slaw. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for kids 8 and younger.
Sunday, March 3rd: 27th Annual Junior Muffin Race!

The Muffin Race, which is the longest standing Junior race in Michigan, celebrates the fun of youth skiing with a Junior Girls & Boys Team Sprint Relay race. Inspired by the Gold Medal victory by Jessie Diggins and Kikkan Randall in the 2018 Olympics, this freestyle relay race will feature two skiers per relay team. Each skier will ski a total of 3 laps around a 1km course, handing off to their teammate between each lap, totaling 6 laps per team. Registration begins at 9:30am on Sunday, and we will shoot for a 10:30am start. This is a Michigan Cup Junior Race. Medals will be awarded to the top 3 finishers in the girls division, boys division, and coed division, and awards will also be given for best costumes! After the Muffin Team Sprint Relay Race, we will hold three Mini Muffin freestyle races: Ages 6 years and under, 7 to 9 and 10 to 12. All racers 12 and under will be awarded a medal!

There is a $10 entry fee for Muffin Racers 13 and older. There is no entry fee for the Mini Muffin Racers. All racers receive a Pig Roast lunch at the awards ceremony. The Pig Roast is $5 for anyone else who might be hungry too. All racers and family members who partake in the Pig Roast will also receive a complimentary 1-day XC SKI HQ facilities pass.

The Sale is On! Race equipment is on closeout – demo today!
