Shanty Creek Snow Report – 01/24

Schuss Mountain

Updated Friday, January 24

Schuss Mtn is open today 9am to 9pm with 43 of 43 slopes open. There will be 5 lifts servicing all runs today—the Yellow, Pink, Purple, and Red quad chair lifts. Over on the bunny hill the Magic Carpet is running.

Summit Mountain will makes its debut tonight. The Black Lift opens with four runs from 5pm-10pm. The Alpine Tubing Park at Summit also opens 5pm-10pm.

Temps will be warmer today with highs in mid 30s. Corduroy to start the day. The snow will be firm and increasingly soft as the day grows long. For Nordic enthusiasts, the entire circuit has groomed all the past weekend’s powder into skating corduroy.

Summit Mountain

Updated Friday, Jan 24. The Black Lift and several runs WILL OPEN TONIGHT at Summit Mtn. Although we have entered into another forecast where daily temps are in the low-to-mid-30s.

If you’re aware of micro-climate science, you probably understand why snow making conditions for Summit and Schuss can be radically different despite being within a few miles of each other. That’s because until Lake Bellaire freezes, the humidity coming off the lake can alter wet bulb measurements causing snowmaking to be much more difficult and challenging (than at Schuss). Humidity can also increase air temps by 2-4 degrees.
