XC Ski Headquarters Cross Country Ski Report – 01/31

Yesterday: a couple of happy skaters in their native environment!

We are happy to report excellent skating conditions on all the trails. Groomers Mike and Butch have done a tremendous job out there, and with the dustings of fresh snow throughout the week, the skate lanes are firm, smooth, and the perfect consistency for friction-less and controllable skating. The classic tracks are good in some places, and hard in others. Mariah classic skied much of the trail system and stayed outside of the classic tracks yesterday (she was pulling a pulk), and was quite pleased with classic skiing even in the skate lanes! After more snow last night, and more in the forecast for tonight, we are hopeful that the tracks will regain some grip in the slick spots by tomorrow. There are 4 to 6 inches of snow packed on the trails, and 6 to 10 inches in the woods. Another fun weekend is on deck at XC Ski HQ!

After your ski, warm up with a hot lunch at the Stone Turtle Cafe! Chili, panini sandwiches, burrito bowls, or the plant-based Beyond the Trail Burger awaits. Sip a Peppermint Patty or Fireside Cider in front of the fireplace, or outside in the Ice Dome Igloo!

Plus, demo one of our 40+ ski packages today! Lots to choose from in recreational classic, skin skis, back country, skate skis, and kids ski packages. Best of all, you’ll get expert ski-fitting help, available all day, every day. Demos are always free!
Upcoming Events:

Saturday, Feb 1st: Free Beginner Ski Lesson at 10:30am! Around the World Wine Tour is sold out.

Sunday, Feb 2nd: Bob’s Bean Bomb Cooking Demo and Nacho Bar! Yes, you read that right. Bob Frye, creator of Bob’s Bean Bomb, invites YOU to learn how to make Bean Bomb for yourself! Watch him start from scratch with pinto beans, jalapenos, bacon, and other secret ingredients, and cook it up on a giant cast iron skillet over the fire pit. When it all comes together, grab a plate and head to the Nacho Bar to build your own platter of Bean Bomb nachos. Please, no cameras or videos during the cooking show – you will be sworn to secrecy!

Next Weekend… Saturday, February 8th: The Mason Tract Point-to-Point Rendezvous! Join us in a point-to-point ski tour of beloved local trail, the Mason Tract. This groomed (classic only) nine mile, intermediate level trail winds along an undeveloped stretch of the AuSable River. The scenery is pristine and beautiful, and skiing through it is a quintessential Northern Michigan winter experience. Click here for more information, and to pre-register. *Participants must be able to complete this 9 mile trail before 5:00pm. Lodging and dinner specials are available for participants at Gates Lodge and AuSable Riverview Resort, both located on the main branch of the Ausable River!
