Noquemanon Trail Network Cross Country Ski Report – 01/12

Grooming January 12, 2021

Forestville: Doug is cleaning up the skate lanes on high traffic areas such as the Noque to 17k, Animoosh and Chiwagi by pass. The hard base and below freezing temperatures will continue to keep the skate lanes quite nice except for the number of areas where dirt is showing. The thin areas are vey easy to avoid so the skate skiers remain quite happy. Classic tracks are getting quite old especially close to the trail head and around turns. However, once you get three or four k away from Forestville they are Fair to even Good.

Fit Strip: The Fit Strip was roll packed the week of new years but I expect this warm spell at the lower elevations has rendered the trails all but unskiable. Think snow.

Big Bay Pathway: Reggie skied Hidden Grin Sunday and reported a great deal of foot traffic has destroyed the classic tracks. Think snow.

Saux Head: All trails were skate lane groomed on the 1st. MRT4 skied Saux Head earlier this week and indicated it was in rough shape but skiable.

Snow Bike Trails:

NORTH TRAILS

Last groom on Sunday 1/3/21

Trail base fast and firm. Excellent riding conditions.

Coverage is good with frequent rocks and roots showing through.

A couple of caution areas where trails are icy:

– On the Penstock Trail just before it connects to Blue Heron Trail

– On the BLP Trail where there is run off from the penstock

South Trails Grooming:

South Trails were groomed the week of New Years.

Mt. Marquette loop, Main loop, Enchantment loop, and Old Camp Ridge……OCR still needs some work but is ridable.

Also groomed Eh-line but its not going to be ridable for a bit yet.

*****warning****

Watch out for the ice on the bottom of Mt. Marquette loop (aka Jeep Trail). We sanded it the best we could, but its still going to be slick.”

WTLGR: There is a hard core of skiers that pass each day and, with a nod of the head say, “see you tomorrow”. Philosophers of the first millennia BCE spent a good deal of time analyzing such recreation. You know they were not writing to the guy in a pit filling boxes with salt. Fast forward two thousand years and the great grooming report writer Jerry Lopez justified self indulgence by pointing out how a happy person can do good in the world. Closer to home there some ski to allow them to eat more. Now, I am not talking about “fun” sports like down hill skiing or surfing but rather the other kind. So, if you are one of these regular aerobic athletes, please share your rational.
