Vasa Trail Cross Country Ski Report – 02/05

From the trailhead thru the nip, the Vasa is in great shape! ‘Twas fast with enough roughed up snow on the hard base for controlled skating. I jumped in the classic tracks and observed occasionally and they’re a solid B w some thin spots or ice.

Hopefully some of u can report on the rest of the trail so others can know what to expect (that’s the purpose of this page 😉). I can wholeheartedly recommend getting on at the trailhead. You will not be disappointed. A few thin spots? Yeah but so insignificant. 😉🤙🏽❄️

Photo and report from frequent Vasa skier, Paula H Dreeszen:

I skied parts of the 25K, 10K, and Special K (trails near Timber Ridge) on Wednesday. Tracks were well-formed, not regroomed after Tuesday’s warmup, but were very icy! I only skied in the track on flat or slight uphill sections. Gray color of ice in the track (photo) was primarily due to snow fleas. I used the skate lane for downhills.

A NordicSkiRacer review of Lost Lake Pathway on Wednesday mentioned the Vasa. The reviewer said the classic tracks at Vasa were “luge runs”. They were that icy in most places, but I did find some dry snow in the bottom of the track between 10K-6.2 and 10K-7.

From the Groomers this morning:

Another chilly morning on the trail, with Jim and Mike reporting 8 degrees (some weather resources showed a low of 2 degrees overnight), and no new snow (😔).

With the absence of meaningful new snow recently, the Vasa grooming crew is playing a balancing act right now between making a safe, fun ski experience using the existing snow, and preserving the (albeit thin in places) base for what we hope will be the rest of a long ski season. We appreciate your support and adaptability as we navigate the dynamic world of natural snow grooming in the modern era.

Today’s groomers have finished the 5k Headwaters loop, setting new tracks and scratching the skate lane; the 10k loop with new skate lane corduroy; and are currently progressing around the outer reaches of the 25k loop, scratching the skate lane and refreshing tracks where the base allows.

We hope you are looking forward to another beautiful weekend of Vasa Trail skiing!

And good luck to our friends competing in today’s White Pine Stampede races: may the wind be at your backs, your skis ever glide, and your kick wax ever grip as you stomp your way up steep hills!

Cheers, James…02/05/22…7:45 AM
