Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail Cross Country Ski Report – 12/26

Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail and Palmer Woods

December 26, 2022

Snow conditions are very good in most places. Get out there before the weather warms up!

Best ski conditions are at the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive. Park at the parking lot near the entrance and take the spur to the Heritage Trail. It is groomed from the parking lot to the trail, and the trail is groomed with two sets of classic tracks both ways.

Ski conditions are good from Glen Arbor to DH Day Campground.
The loop in the campground is groomed and really good.

The groomers worked from Glen Arbor to near Empire today. They will be working north of Glen Arbor tomorrow (12/27/22). Groomers will go from Crystal View Trailhead to Wheeler Road (Lawr Farm) and then up to Palmer Woods.

Down Tree Near Empire – There is a massive tree down across the trail completely blocking the trail about 0.5 miles north of the Bar Lake Trailhead parking lot. I’m not sure when this will be removed. Groomers had to turn around there, so the trail is not groomed between Empire and the down tree.

Dune Climb Sledding:

Heavy snow on the Dune Climb. Families were sledding today.

Backcountry ski and hiking trails (Old Indian, Platte Plains, Windy Moraine, Bay View, Good Harbor, Alligator Hill)

Fresh snow everywhere

Popular Hiking Trails (Empire Bluffs, Pyramid Point):

Snowshoes recommended if you are going to hike these trails.

Be ready to get out on the Lakeshore Trails whenever the snow flies and get the most up-to-date information about the winter trails and activities around the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on our ‘Winter Trails Report’ page.

FROM Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes >> Good morning Skiers! We've seen a few inches of snow accumulation over the past 24 hours and it's beautiful. Unfortunately, our winter grooming vehicle has already been prepped for the summer and won't be out on the Heritage Trail today. We hope you're still able to get outside and enjoy the snow ❄️ #sleepingbear #crosscountry #snowphotos #SkiMichiganGood morning Skiers! FROM Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes >> A massive THANK YOU to our Volunteer Trail Grooming Team! ❄️⛷
It’s been an incredible winter on the Heritage Trail, with months of unparalleled cross-country skiing. This season would not have been possible without our dedicated volunteers who fought the cold, wind, and drifting snow to lay down tracks for us all. Not to mention the many downed trees they cleared!
Here’s a snapshot of the epic season they helped create:
❄️ Total Snowfall in Leelanau County: Over 10.5 FEET!
🧣 Highlights: A typical northern Michigan season defined by heavy snow events, significant drifting, and changing temperatures that required constant, expert management by our crew.
We are so grateful for your hard work and commitment to our community. You are the heart of the trail! Please show some love for our groomers in the comments. 👇 #sleepingbear #SkiMichigan
