Siblings George and Mariah Frye competed with fellow XC Ski HQ race team members, and other skiers at this weekend’s Michigan Cup races at Forbush Corner and Hanson Hills. Hats off to all the race directors for putting on these great races amidst extra challenging snow conditions!

After an awesome President’s Day Weekend, the sunshine has taken a toll on the ski trails. The classic tracks are more or less wiped out at this point, but the skating lanes will provide some nice skiing today. Snow Doctor Mitch will begin patching the few bare spots on the trails starting at 8:30 this morning, starting with the Rolling Hills trail, and followed by Adventure, Wild Turkey, and Manitou, in that order. Groomer Butch will snow comb the skating lanes this morning, too. The only trail that is closed is Tall Pines, and all the others are open and skiable. Stone Turtle Cafe is open today serving up our same great menu, plus weekend special: Mac & Cheese Bar. MORE SNOW is in the forecast for this week, so keep your fingers crossed that we get the 8-11 inches that is forecasted! Plan on a really fun upcoming weekend, featuring Ribs & Blues on Saturday, and the Junior Muffin Race on Sunday! Read below for more details.

Friday, Feb 17th – 10:00am to 5:30pm: Winter Fest Kick-Off
For only $5, visitors to the Higgins Lake/Roscommon area can purchase a Winter Fest badge and enjoy a day of cross country skiing or snowshoeing at XC Ski HQ. The badge gets you an XC Ski HQ facilities pass for the day, plus complimentary hot cocoa and bonfire at Trapper’s Cabin from 3:30-5:30. It also gets you access to lots of other fun local events throughout the weekend. Equipment rentals are available on Friday for badge holders for the special rate of $5. Check the Roscommon-Higgins Lake Chamber of Commerce website for more information on all there is to see and do on Winter Fest weekend!

Saturday, Feb 18th to Monday, Feb 20th – Noon to 4:00pm: Gourmet Mac ‘n Cheese Bar

Prepare to indulge in this decadent classic comfort food, complete with a toppings bar that includes onions, tomatoes, spinach, jalapenos, feta cheese, peas, hotdogs, and bacon. So rich and delicious, this mac-sterpiece lunch is the perfect complement to a day on the ski trails!

Saturday, Feb 18th – 10:30am: Free Beginner Ski Lesson

Learn how to cross country ski at our FREE beginner ski lesson! You will learn the basics of traditional (classic style) XC ski technique, plus hill climbing, descending, and turning. You will even learn how to get up when you fall down! Free lessons are limited to 25 people. Ski rentals are available at the rental desk on a first-come, first-served basis (we do not take rental reservations). The free lesson lasts 1 hour.
