Vasa Trail Cross Country Ski Report – 01/19

7:50 AM : Vasa Trailhead. I’ve heard from a few skate ski junkies who’ve skied the Vasa yesterday and this morning. Here’s a summary of their comments. ‘It’s soft and slow but early in the morning, with the cooler temps, there wasn’t any damage to the trail’…’I saw 8 other skiers throughout the 15k loop and 5 in the parking lot about to head out when I got back’…’Classic tracks seemed fine and I did a lot of double poling as it was faster and thought it best to limit time in the skate lane’. These are diehard, reputable skiers who also have an understanding of protecting the skate and classic lanes from damage.

I fully respect and understand why the groomers recommend staying off the trail in general today but if you’re conscientious and considerate (and willing to recognize if you’re damaging the trail and go home) it appears that the early morning ski is doable without hurting the trail. If you get out after noon and into the warmer temps it could be a different story though. And of course all this could change with the warmer temps and rain in the forecast. I’ll keep u posted if I attempt it tomorrow morning and I’ll hope any of you that get out will share your experiences too so we can all know whether or not to head out to the trail during this questionable time. It’s a challenge to get maximum use out of the trail without doing any harm.

And FYI – for those wondering, there is still a lot of base on the trail and a lot of snow in the woods
