Vasa Trail Cross Country Ski Report – 02/17

10 AM finish time. Did the full 27k including JP, HW, and Nip. Maybe the best trail of the season. Firm and fast corduroy all the way around. Probably still good until this afternoon. Plenty of base and overall snow at this point.

But if you’re reading this you’re more interested in what’s to come. Based on how the trail looks I think you’re fine to ski today(Friday), although it’ll likely soften w the warmer temps and sunshine this afternoon.

Since it will stick around 40 tonight, they won’t likely groom tomorrow but early day skiing should be ok. The latest forecast shows a high of 47 tomorrow and partly sunny which is better than the ‘Sunny and 52’ that had been predicted. So it could very well be fine to ski all day tomorrow with the best skiing early in the day (wax em right).

As for Sunday, this new forecast is encouraging as temps should be a bit lower than previously expected with a high of 45 and lows Saturday night in the lower 30’s.

To sum it up, it’s really a crapshoot guessing when this trail will break down with this forecast but based on the info we have I think it’ll be spring like conditions all weekend and likely very skiable. Another indication is that they are holding the Michigan High School XC Ski Championships at the Bartlett Road Trailhead and give no indication of changing their schedule(see details below).

This video and pics are so u can see this morning’s conditions and help decide if u want to make the trip to the trail this weekend(I will optimistically be out both mornings). ❄👍🏼

**The High School Championships are being held today and Saturday at the trail head. They will be racing on portions of the VASA trail near the trail head out to the 2K hill and circling back on a short cut to the 5K where they will continue clockwise to the finish behind the warming hut. If you would like to spectate please join us at the stadium behind the warming hut where the starts and finishes will be. Its a lot of fun. Bring a cow bell.
