Vasa Trail Cross Country Ski Report – 02/18

Short version – Get out and ski! It’s glorious.

More Details – There is still a lot of snow on the trail and a lot of base. Starting at 7:45 AM from the trailhead (it was already 42 degrees) I did the full 27k loop and there is something for everyone; brutal icy patches at the most inopportune places(check…about 3%), soft slow spots where the sun has touched (check…about 10%), and then there is about 87% of the trail that is still fantastically well-groomed, fun, and fast. That will change later so if u can get out soon, do that. Sunday morning will probably be best too if your going out tomorrow.

I’d recommend starting anywhere but the Bartlett Rd Trailhead…the parking lot is dangerously icy(seriously), there’s no parking as the High School Championships are being held there today, the trail there is in rough shape for the first 2K either thru HW or over the bridge(see photo #3), plus there’s a bunch of high school skiers trying to race on parts of the trail here. Try starting at Timber Ridge, The Rock, etc. It’s awesome skiing out that far.

Good, deep classic tracks that were fast as lightning today too!

It would be great if you’d post your reports throughout the day so we can all keep up with the conditions as they will likely be changing quite a bit with this weather.

Enjoy!
