XC Ski Headquarters Cross Country Ski Report – 03/10

The XC Ski HQ crew would love to see you this weekend!

We received a dusting of snow last night, which has created a new blanket of white in the woods and on the trails. Snow doctors James, George, Erin, and Matt worked tirelessly yesterday bringing loads of snow across the street onto the trails with the tractor, and spreading it around in the bare spots. There is still a lot of work to be done, and today’s efforts by Tractor Bob to grind up the hard pack on the other parts of the trails with the roto-tiller will tell us a lot about what the conditions will be like this weekend.

As far as ski conditions today, until we can grind up the hardback, the trails are ungroomed and really only safe if you have metal edged skis (which you can borrow from us free of charge). There are bare patches and ice on all the trails, with stretches of Mackinaw Cut, Trapper’s Cabin, Adventure and Rolling Hills in the best condition. Frank Nizio spent 2 hours skiing the trails yesterday on Rossignol BC 65 metal edged skis, which is remarkable and shows that it can be done! Meanwhile, we have heard that Forbush Corner has considerable base left on their trails, and will be working to get them skiable by this afternoon. ***Heart of Michigan XC Special: Present your Forbush Trail Pass at XC Ski HQ this weekend, and get a free “Real Men/Real Women Ski Uphill” pint glass or t-shirt!
