Vasa Trail Cross Country Ski Report – 12/16

Riley’s Grooming Report from the Old Trail Grunt

The analogy that I will use is baking a cake. Ted did a great job of “mixing” the ingredients, yesterday, will all the rolling he did, Mother Nature baked the cake, overnight, with the thermal cycle – from a warm day yesterday to a cold (19) night that really set-up the base, and this morning, I put the icing on the cake with the Ginzu drag starting to level the track, leaving narrow corduroy, and the first set classic tracks of the season. Up through yesterday, we just had a compressed powder base and pick-ups, snowmobiles, skate skiers, and fat bikers all left huge ruts. Overnight, the base really firmed up and the skate skiers and the fat bikers where gliding on top. And, yes, the one pick-up truck (Ted thinks he is a hunter vs a drunken yahoo) and the one snowmobile left tracks that were easily scrubbed-out.

I did drag-up some dirt from bumps here and there with the worst being just before the between the lakes crossing. Also, there are areas of stubby growth through the snow, mostly along the edges. So, if anyone feels motivated, take a pair of pruning shears (no need for loppers) with you the next time you are out.

All in all, very good conditions for so early in the season. I will be turning the grooming duties over to my very able, co-groomer, Ted Kraimer, while Donna and I are doing the family holidays in PA & OH (the 22nd probably through the 29th).
